Sleepless Skin



Ask any esthetician, dermatologist or skincare expert the necessary steps to healthy skin and a good nights sleep will most certainly be a constant on that list. It is not a secret that lack of sleep shows itself in our skin; a dull complexion, dark undereye circles and blotchiness are all side affects. However, for those with a busy schedule, accomplishing the recommended eight hours of sleep can sometimes feel like a dream! So to help you ease into sleep after a stressful day, here are a few natural sleep inducers:

Melatonin: This is a naturally occurring hormone secreted by the pineal gland that usually increases at night to make you feel sleepy but can be affected by stress, jet lag, and even age. Taking a supplement of melatonin will raise the level in your body and help to relax you.

Tryptophan: You have probably heard about this amino acid around the Thanksgiving table as there are high levels in turkey but it also the reason behind the age old glass of milk before bedtime. The reason for this is that tryptophan is responsible for the production of melatonin. Therefore an increase in tryptophan will quicken this production along with your accent into sleep.

Valerian Root: A flowering plant native to parts of Europe and Asia, this herb can be found at a vitamin store in pill form. It is a mild sedative and releases a calming feeling that can relinquishes you of the anxiety of the day and deliver a more peaceful nights sleep.
