What Makes Spirulina So Powerful?

With the release of two new Laszlo Blue Firmarine products, you may well be wondering why Spirulina is such an effective part any skin care routine. The answer lies in the fact that it is a powerhouse nutrient that delivers firming benefits, as well as anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties for overall skin health. Some of the most important but rarely discussed nutrients Spirulina provides are Beta Carotene, GLA, and Protein.

Beta Carotene
The beta carotene that is contained in Spirulina is ten times more concentrated than it is in a carrot, which means that it can do wonders for your skin. This nutrient helps to block UVA radiation, which can damage your skin by causing aging, DNA damage, and an incresed risk of malignant melanomas. Furthermore, it encourages new skin growth, and helps to heal skin lesions caused by acne. Finally, as it is an antioxidant, it helps to protect your skin aganist free radicals, while fighting the bacteria that can cause acne in the first place.
Protein
Protein is not one specific substance, but rather tens of thousands of different compounds with unique combinations of its building blocks - amino acids. Collagen, the structural tissue that is responsible for keeping skin firm, is actually a type of fibrous protein. Spirulina itself is over 60% protein, and can help supplement the collagen in your skin and stimulate new growth. This helps your skin to stay firm and younger looking for quite a long time.
GLA
GLA, or Gamma-linolenic acid, has been known to help children with eczema, better skin conditions in women, and improve skin function in the elderly. In fact, in a German study, patients with red, irritated skin who were provided GLA were shown to have greatly improved in a span on 12 weeks. Furthermore, women with sensitive and irritiable skin who were provided GLA were shown to have vastly improved skin barrier function a mere six weeks in their studies. The improvements only continued throughout the final 18 weeks of the study.

And, of course, Laszlo Blue Firmarine products also contain Vitamin C and E providing long lasting antioxidant protection. Also, Glycerin, Soribtol and Palm Kernel to help hydration and retain moisture by binding water to the skin. Rest assured that with Laszlo Blue Firmarine and Spirulina Maxima, your skin will never feel softer or look younger.

Why Under Eye Skin is So Special

Most of us know that under-eye skin requires more care than most other places, but why is that? Today, I'd like to take a few moments to clear up some questions that may exist on the subject.

First and foremest, the skin under your eyes must endure more than its share of stress as a result of frequent eye movements and squinting. Couple this with the fact that under-eye skin is rather thin and more sensitive than the skin in other areas, and you've got a recipe for rapid aging. Furthermore, while the skin around the cheeks and nose has particularly active sebaceous gland which ensure that it stays sufficiently hydrated, the skin around the eyes has virtually no active sebaceous glands. This makes it prone to persistent dryness, which further enhances the potential for rapid premature aging. Finally, this area of skin is filled to the brink with a dense capillary network, but isn't supported with very much padding (ie. fat). This makes it vulnerable to puffiness/dark circles after sleepless night, and after aging has set in.

Clearly, the eyes warrant special attention. Luckily, Erno Laszlo has a lot of great products which are perfectly suited this special area!

The Splash Technique

Water. The Laszlo line is centered around the importance of pure, simple water in keeping skin looking young and radiant. Dr. Erno Laszlo was such a staunch believer in its power that he stated, "if water did not exist, as a cosmetologist, I would have to invent it". Indeed, Dr. Laszlo was speaking the truth, as without water his famous "splashing" technique would not exist. "Splashing" you face with comforably hot water causes unprecedented rejuvenation of the skin by deeply cleansing and exfoliating skin, flushing out toxins, and stimulating collagen production. It is able to accomplish the feat because, in Dr. Laszlo's words, "the chemicals in the oil and in the [soapy treatment water] will loosen an pick up dirt" from your face, leaving it "soft and sterile clean, without a trace of dirt remaning". He himself splashed his face at least ninety times a day, and you could see the results on his face. Splashing is the best way to care for your skin in the world, and should not be overlook.

Sun Protection Factor

So, you've decided to go outside and brave the heat? Well, if you're planning on staying outdoors for any significant length of time, I'll assume that you're also planning to put on some sunscreen to protect yourself against sunburns. We all know that suncreens with a high SPF are important to maintaining your skin's health, but what's actually going on in that sunscreen?

First, it's important to understand the difference between sunscreen and sun block. Although conventional wisdom holds that they're the same thing, that is not actually true. The main difference comes down to the fact that sunblock is opaque, effectively protects against UVA rays, and does not need to be reapplied for it to remain effective. Suncreens, however, are transparent, need to be reapplied often, and do not always protect against UVA rays. Those that do generally contain zinc oxide, avobenzone, and ecamsule, so be sure to look for those on labels. It's so important to do so because, even though they may not cause redness or irritation, UVA rays have the potential to cause aging, DNA damage, and an incresed risk of malignant melanomas.

Anyway, the SPF denotes the amount of UV radiation required to cause sunburn on the skin wearing the sunscreen. For example, if you're wearing a sunscreen that is an SPF 50, your skin will burn only after it has been exposed to 50 times the amount of solar enegry that would normally cause it to burn. We all know, however, that this is not always accurate, as the amount of protection provided also depends on the user's skin type, the amount of sunscreen applied, what activites the user will be participating in, and the amount of sunscreen the skin has been able to absorb.

The Ten Most Beautiful Women of All-Time Revealed

Yesterday, QVC revealed the results of their most beautfil women of all time poll. Not surprisingly, a former Laszlo devotee topped the list. We know Dr. Laszlo thought the most beautiful woman of all time was Greta Garbo, but what about the rest of you? The winner is..

Audrey Hepburn!

Audrey climbed to the top of the list by beating out such other classic beauties as Marilyn Monroe, Halle Berry, and Grace Kelly. This was not the first honor the timeless beauty received, however. Earlier this year, the black Givenchy dress she wore in the 1961 film 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' was voted the Best Female Onscreen Outfit of All Time. LoveFilm Editor Helen Cowley wasn't surprised a bit by Ms. Hepburn's victory, however, stating that "[she] has truly made that little black dress a fashion staple which has stood the test of time despite competition from some of the most stylish females around". We couldn't agree more.

The list is rounded out as follows:

2. Cheryl Cole
3. Marilyn Monroe (Note: That makes two Laszlo devotees in the top three. Coincidence? I think not.)
4. Angeline Jolie
5. Grace Kelly
6. Scarlett Johansson
7. Halle Berry
8. Diana, Princess of Wales
9. Kelly Brook
10. Jennifer Aniston
