Ingredient Spotlight: Spirulina Maxima

Spirulina Maxima is an abundant fresh water blue-green algae, originating from a genus of microalgae that has inhabited the earth for more than 3.5 billion years. Its ongoing photosynthetic activity is partially responsible for the oxygen-rich environment in which we live today. Spirulina is a simple, single-celled plant that boasts a very complex nutritional profile. Composed of over 60% protein, this phytonutrient contains exceptionally high concentrations of beta-carotene, vitamin B12, iron, and the rare and essential fatty acid Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Spirulina works to firm the skin by nourishing the epidermal microenvironment and feeding new collagen growth from within. Find Spirulina in any of our Laszlo BLUE products.

August 2011: Cactus Month

There are hundreds of varieties of this prickly plant and many have different benefits for your health when either consumed or used topically. The Prickly Pear Cactus is an edible variety that can be eaten by peeling to remove the spines. They are very rich in insoluble and soluble dietary fiber. They are also rich in vitamins A, C, K, and B6 and may help in the treatment of diabetes. Aloe Vera, a plant closely related to the cactus, is often used in skin care formulas due to its unique ability to prevent moisture loss, a quality necessary for healthy skin. Aloe Vera extract helps prevent water evaporation from the outer most layer of the skin and acts as a moisturizer.

The Legacy of Dr. Erno Laszlo

This week (July 11, to be exact) we celebrated the 114th anniversary of Dr. Erno Laszlo, the legend who created a skin care ritual that has kept men and women looking young for over 84 years. In honor of the legacy he has left, here are a few quotes from the Doctor himself:

• “You cannot treat skin as though it were some kind of unpainted furniture to be finished and refinished forever after. Every day, at least twice a day, you must get down to the pure, unvarnished surface. And only proper washing, yes, with soap and water, will remove the layers of ‘paint.’ As well as the dust, and the dry little surface flakes.”
• “Beauty does not happen of its own accord. A flower would not be beautiful if it didn’t have the help of rain, of the sun, of nourishment from the soil. Your skin, too, must be given the essential elements and chemicals it requires before it can regain its natural beauty.”
• “Beautifying your skin is neither simple nor an overnight task. It is a matter of constant prevention, protection and correction. If you want skin beauty after 40, you must begin to work at it when you are 20.”

Cheers to the many upcoming years of fantastic skin care!
